The GMD SD40-2(W) is a Canadian-market version of the SD40-2 diesel–electric locomotive, built for the Canadian National Railway (CN) by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd. (formerly General Motors Diesel) of London, Ontario; 123 were constructed between May 1975 and December 1980.

507 draws a venerable SD40-2W for power on this fine Sunday morning. 507 has briefly nosed out onto the Halifax Transfer Track at Birch Cove before shoving a cut of containers to the Ceres container pier. Subbing for the usual pair of GP38-2s, 5321 shoves well cars towards the Ceres Container Pier in the background. Mont-Joli SUB, Milepost 124.62.

Mar 10, 2025 · CN SD40-2 (W) #5250, seen in 2008. The SD40-2 (W) followed some of the same detail changes as the GMD SD40-2. However, it was not affected by changes specific to the standard cab, such as the side panel around the windows, cab sub-base, battery box covers or the length of the short hood.

The best source of a roster of CN's SD40-2W is a copy of the yearly published Candadian Trackside Guide from 1988 to the most current issue 2023. The all editions of the Canadian Trackside Guide list all the SD40-2Ws by engine number.
