GCFX/Alstom 6000 Series units have been assigned by CN to the WC to replace retired SD45's. The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2.

The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

The SD40 was a popular locomotive in North America. It was used in large numbers by many railways. The SD40 puts out 3000 HP, has six-wheel C-C trucks, and has a top speed of about 65 miles per hour (105 km per hour).

In early November, locomotives scrapped at the Woodcrest Shop included: CN SD40-2 5370, IC SD40AR 6008, IC SD40-2 6030 (w/o DB), and IC SD40-2 6117. At month end all the remaining retired IC 6100-series, including ones stored in Memphis, had been moved to Woodcrest for the CN auction sale.

Mar 10, 2025 · CN SD40-2 (W) #5250, seen in 2008. The SD40-2 (W) followed some of the same detail changes as the GMD SD40-2. However, it was not affected by changes specific to the standard cab, such as the side panel around the windows, cab sub-base, battery box covers or the length of the short hood.
