CNR EMD GP9u #4100 at Concord Ont. July 2001 There were a total of 646 GP9u's built for Canadian railways. They were built between January 1954 - August 1963. They used a V16 engine producing 1750 hp.

Retired on 02/14/2011, this AMT GP9u (built mid-50 by EMD as class GR-17u - ex. CN 4307 and ex. STCUM 1311) was donated to Canadian Railway Museum (EXPORAIL) on 08/31/2011. AMT stands for "Agence métropolitaine de transport" which means Metropolitan Transport Agency.

Canadian Pacific GMD GP9u 1688 built in 1954 as TH&B GP9 401, acquired (1987) and rebuilt (1988) by CP as GP9u with chop-nosed and renumbered to 1688 in 1987, retired in 2013, and seen in St. Luc, PQ Sept. 2, 1988.

The fourth former AMT GP9u (AMT 1311), was donated to the (CRHA) Exporail museum in St-Constant, QC a few years back. AMT GP9u 1310, 1312, and 1313 and CN GP9RM 7007 were sold to MVPX and all four geeps are now in Chicago, IL. The units were shot in Transit at CN Taschereau Yard August 4th.

Jul 10, 1996 · The GP9u units saw service across Canada and into the United States for over 30 years. At the end of their careers, the majority were retired and traded in for the GP20C-ECO program starting in 2011. The last unit was retired in September, 2015.
