The 36-foot motor lifeboat is a motor lifeboat class operated by the United States Coast Guard between 1929 and 1987. These vessels are remembered for the daring rescues performed by Coast Guard surfmen while using them.

To provide a more powerful motor lifeboat for these expanded duties, the Type T was a completely new design as a replacement for the previous Type H motor lifeboat. The Type T had a more powerful motor, heavier and stronger scantlings, and a stronger hull form.

CG-36500 is a standard 36-foot (11 m) lifeboat, a vessel designed to remain operational under extremely difficult conditions. It has a heavy 2,000 pounds (910 kg) bronze keel and skeg, watertight compartments, and self-bailing features.

Feb 10, 2016 · In 1952, coxswain Bernie Webber with a crew of three took CG-36500, a 36-foot motor lifeboat, across Chatham bar in a winter Nor’easter to rescue the crew of the T2 tanker SS. Pendleton, which had broken in half in the storm.

The actual CG36500 motor lifeboat involved in the rescue, fully restored and operational, is owned by the Orleans Historical Society and still plies its home waters of Cape Cod.

The CG 36500 is famous for the rescue of 32 men from the tanker S. S. Pendleton, which broke in half during a winter storm off Chatham Bar, the elbow of Cape Cod (also known as New England’s graveyard of ships).

The United States Coast Guard's series of motor lifeboats included a class of 36 foot motor lifeboats. The Coast Guard built the first of these vessels in 1929, and retired the last, CG 36500, in 1987.
