In the setting of a viral infection, CD4+ T cells differentiate primarily into T helper 1 (Th1) effectors, which help cytotoxic CD8+ T cells to lyze infected cells, and into T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, which help B cells to generate highly matured antibodies.

Figure 1 summarizes much of what we know about the major sets of CD4 T cells, including their unique products, the characteristic transcription factors and cytokines critical for their fate determination and some of their functions. Each of these topics will be discussed in some depth in the subsequent sections of this review. Figure 1.
