Raw Materials comprises text pieces that since 1966 have been critical parts of Bruce Nauman’s work – read on the page, spoken and sung in audio works and videos, seen illuminated in neon and chiselled in stone. Using existing material, Nauman recorded some of these texts for the first time and re-recorded others.

Called Text for a Room (1973/2025) on the checklist, its details are “Wallboard, text on paper,” and “Dimensions variable.” The room is a first-time recreation of its 1973 debut, newly configured by a text Nauman wrote that is available on a sheet of green office paper provided in a stack on a pedestal adjacent to its entrance.

With the simplest of word games, the most inane bad humour and subtle shifts in simple rules, Nauman has a way of making us question the ground on which we stand. Neon words flash: Violins, Violence, Silence, 1981–82; another work is a flashing text circle reading “LIFE, DEATH, LOVE, HATE, PLEASURE, PAIN.”
