This webpage will teach you about your child’s central venous catheter, how to care for it at home, and what to do if there is a problem. The catheter may also be called a tunneled central line or sometimes a Broviac®. The goals of catheter care are to keep the catheter working properly and to avoid infections.

Broviac is a type of central line that allows for long-term access to blood. There is an entry site where the catheter enters the blood vessel and an exit site where the central line comes out of the body. The Broviac has a cuff under the skin near the exit site. The cuff is a thick fabric ring that circles the catheter line.

The catheter can have one, two or three lumens (single, double, triple lumen). It can be called several different names including: Hickman, Broviac, Groshong, or TDC (tunneled dialysis catheter). How is it placed? The catheter is placed by a doctor in the interventional radiology suite.

A tunneled central line (sometimes known as a tunneled catheter, Powerline®, Hickman®, or Broviac® catheter) is a central venous catheter that is tunneled under the skin. It is usually inserted into a vein under the collarbone (subclavian vein) or in the neck (jugular vein).

Placing a broviac line typically requires local anesthesia, either alone or in combination with intravenous sedation. Under fluoroscopy, the vein is accessed and a guidewire is inserted into the heart and then the inferior vena cava to validate the venous access point.

A Broviac®/Hickman® central venous line (CVL) is a special intravenous (IV) line inserted under the skin on the chest wall and into a large vein that leads to the heart.

Children who require repeated blood draws or intravenous medications often have a semipermanent central venous catheter placed. A Broviac catheter is tunneled through the subcutaneous tissues of the chest and emerges as a thin plastic tube, usually at the level of the second or third rib.
