1st Military Working Dog Regiment, the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was formed on 26th March 2010 to best force generate Military Working Dogs (MWD) and to enhance the Whole Fleet Management of both MWD handlers and MWDs.

The 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, Royal Army Veterinary Corps is a British Army working dog unit. It is responsible for providing trained dogs and handlers to support British Armed Forces on operations in the UK and overseas.The regiment holds the Army’s only deployable MWD and veterinary capability.

Canine Training Squadron (CTS) is responsible for delivering trained Military Working Dogs (MWDs) to an array of customers within the MOD. Within the UK Armed Forces there is a current requirement for over 200 trained MWDs to be delivered per annum.

It trains animals, of which the most numerous are dogs, for all three armed forces. Its headquarters are also the principal base of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. The Army first occupied the Melton Mowbray site in 1946, and it became known as the Defence Animal Centre, a title which remained current until 2018.

Dogs have a very long history in warfare, beginning in ancient times. From being trained in combat, to their use as scouts, sentries, messengers, mercy dogs, and trackers, their uses have been varied, and some continue to exist in modern military usage.
