While the Bren Mk III design also aimed at reducing cost, it also had the concurrent goal of being lightened for jungle warfare; the final product weighed 19 lb 5 oz (8.8 kg), 3 pounds lighter than the original Bren Mk I design; it was standardised in July 1944 and saw a production of 57,600.

The Bren Light Machine gun was introduced in 1937 and the Mark III version in 1944. It was used post war by the British in Korea, Malaya, Cyprus and Aden. It was then converted to 7.62mm and saw service in Northern Ireland, the Falklands and the Gulf War.

The Mk3 and Mk4 were light variants for paratroop use developed in 1944, with a slightly shortened barrel and various parts milled down further than a standard Bren to reduce weight: Mk3 was the term for a Mk1 modified in this fashion, while the Mk4 was the same done to a Mk2.

Oct 29, 2014 · The first production L4A1 Brens were converted from .303-caliber Mk3 Brens between 1955 and 1956. As the L4A1 Brens entered service, the need for modifications was discovered in the field, resulting in the L4A2 Bren.

An excellent used example of an original Enfield 1955 deactivated Mk3 Bren Gun, chambered in .303, complete with magazine and bipod. The shorter and lighter Bren MKIII was produced in relatively small numbers, from 1944 by Enfield, for the war in the East and for Airborne Forces.

Based on a Czech design the Bren was the main fire support weapon of a British infantry section. Reliable and very accurate the Bren had a long career in all British and Commonwealth armies and is still in production today.
