The succeeding Breda LRV2/LRV3 fleet of 151 cars is scheduled to phase into retirement between 2021, when the oldest cars are 25 years old, and completely retire by 2027. 25 years is considered the useful lifespan of light rail vehicles, per the FTA and Muni.

2nd Generation Breda LRVs: 1995 to Present. Familiar to riders today are Muni's second generation LRVs- grey and red Breda trains providing the bulk of rail service system-wide. These cars started arriving in 1995 to replace the problematic first generation trains from the 1980s.

To increase this critical rail service, the SFMTA has begun procuring over 200 new light rail vehicles, manufactured by Siemens, to replace our legacy fleet, manufactured by Breda. The procurement of these new light rail vehicles is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

The Breda cars, which cannot MU with the Boeings, can be found on all five lines, with the N line being exclusively Breda (since August 1998). The Boeing have since been entirely replaced by the Bredas.
