Aug 9, 2023 · Sensei ni rei marks the bow to your Sensei, while the Otagai ni rei is a bow to all of your fellow students. You don’t bow to each of them individually. One bow symbolizes you bowing to everyone.

From seiza (kneeling), facing the front of the dojo, bow (rei) at the waist placing first your left fist and then your right fist on the floor in front of you. Keep your back straight and avoid raising your hips.

In the dojo, students should show proper respect to the sensei, bowing and saying “Osu” when he comes to teach. Students should also show respect to senior students (senpai). Announce your arrival at the dojo by bowing and saying “Osu”, loudly. Leave your shoes neatly placed beside the training room floor.

“Sensei ni rei!”: Bow to the instructor. When you’re bowing, you can say “onegaishimasu,” which, roughly translated, means “Please,” i.e., please teach me, please help me, please hold class, etc.

Sensei ni rei (“bow to sensei”): the entire class bows to the teacher. If sensei is not present, the command will be senpai ni rei, thus bowing to the leader of that day’s class. Otagai ni rei (“bow to the others”): we all symbolically bow to each other by bowing forward.

Sensei and the students bow to each other, saying “Yoroshiku onegai shimasu”, which means “ please teach me something”. At Sensei’s signal, students stand and begin stretches. Students should refrain from moaning and groaning sounds and comments.

To bow in seiza, reach your left palm forward to the floor, then your right palm, and bow your head. Return to the kneeling position by reversing the motion. There may also be a period of mediation (mokuso 黙想 which literally means “silent thoughts”) at the beginning and end of class.

Before class – bow to your Sensei before you do anything else. If he (or she) is in the lobby area, stop, bow and then continue on. If you don’t see him, go in and change, just be sure to stop and bow the first time you do see him.
