In the 20th century, Borovets gradually developed into a modern ski resort with hotels, restaurants, bars and a network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountains, providing a whole range of winter sports. The resort has hosted World Cup twice, Alpine Skiing rounds (1981 and 1984).

In Borovets, the most famous place for ski jumping and biathlon in Bulgaria, the country's largest jumping hill is located, too. It was initially constructed as a K53 in 1979 and was then enlarged into K78 in 1979, ahead of the 1983 Winter Universiade in Sofia. For the Universiade in 1988 it was modernized as K90.
