Past Nursing Practice Acts. The prior-session nursing practice acts linked below are provided for reference purposes only. The Nursing Practice Act can only be changed by legislation enacted by the Texas Legislature which convenes for 140 days every two years.

The BON approves qualified registered nurses to enter practice as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse midwives.

APRNs can use Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) contact hours to meet their BON continuing competency requirements for all requirements except the Nursing Jurisprudence and Nursing Ethics CNE requirement.

The BON recommends that all nurses utilize the Scope of Practice Decision-Making Model (DMM) 1 when deciding if an employer’s job position, policy, or assignment is safe and legally within the nurse’s scope of practice.
