Nov 23, 2010 · At the beginning of The Sixth Sense, you hear such a traffic report refer to the Blue Route. The building of Interstate 476, and the choosing of the “blue route” that roughly tracked the paths of Crum and Darby creeks through Delaware County, was a multi-decade saga of contention and delay.

From I-95 north to I-76, the new EIS for the "Blue Route" featured a downsized, four-lane "parkway"-like route from McDade Boulevard north to PA 3, and a six-lane route that used previously built sections between PA 3 and I-76.

Interstate 476 received its nickname—the Blue Route--from planning maps like this one in 1960 on which Mid-County Expressway planners designated three possible routes for linking Interstate 95 to the south with the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the north in suburban Philadelphia.

Spanning the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor, I-95 shifts northward into the two-wye interchange (Exit 7) with Interstate 476. The Blue Route leads commuters north to Media, Springfield and Wayne among other suburban communities. I-95 south passes through the industrial city of Chester on 11 miles to Wilmington, Delaware. 12/20/22
