Meanning - iron in the surface layer of steel is converted to black iron oxide, also know as magnetite. Since magnetite occupies same volume as metallic iron there are no changes in part's dimmension.

Feb 25, 2015 · I need to blue a barrel using cold blue. Which brand/kind will give me the best deep dark blue. I know, hot is better, but this will be a cold blue job on a bbl in the white. Anyone with experience using a REAL good cold blue please jump in. THANKS.

Blue and wood look great, but for any gun that gets carried often its gotta be stainless and rubber

Feb 14, 2013 · Look at the rag and it should be a rust brown color. If it is then that section of the gun has been polished. Don not polish this section of the gun again. All we are trying to do is take the very top layer of blue off which should remove most small scratches and restore the depth of the blue. Use Cloth 2 to gently wipe any excess/dirty polish off.

Jan 22, 2014 · A stainless gun will stain less, but it's not completely rust proof. A blued carbon steel gun will also stain less than untreated carbon steel, but it's not as rust resistant as stainless steel is. The bluing can also rub off of certain parts of the gun to expose the raw steel. Practically speaking, I still think it's a wash.

Jan 31, 2012 · Blue goes on with a cotton swab, wait a minute or two, and buff with a cloth. Two or three applications will make it a little darker if needed. Then coat it with a dot of oil and you're done. Either type is about $8 a bottle, goes a long way. It won't affect a surface that already has blue, usually blends in pretty well.

Jan 7, 2009 · I carry Dicropan IM, Dicropan T-4, Oxpho-Blue, 44/40, Kleen Bore Black Magic and Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue. I do "not" however put any of them on "cold". I clean (degrease) the spot with lacquer thinner and heat it up with a Propane torch about 15 seconds (moderate heat) then apply the blue solution with a cotton swab.

May 6, 2013 · The polish on a gun comes from the metal being polished to a high luster then the gun is blued! I would guess the you can get some level of of polish using flitz or some other polish but you need to be careful not to polish thru the blued surface! I will sometimes use oiled 0000 steel wool to luster up a pistol but you need to be gentle.

Mar 6, 2025 · I love my SBL in .357. It is a supreme shooter, smooth and accurate as you could possibly ask for. This is one instance where I do not want the same gun in different calibers. I absolutely love the look of the Guide Gun in .45-70, but the offerings in .44, with the black laminate and blue and the straight grip, just do not do it for me.
