Locate all blowoffs for pipelines 16-inch and larger, including fire hydrants designed as blowoffs, as close as possible to an existing/proposed sanitary sewer manhole to allow for the disposal of the chlorinated water into the sanitary sewer.

The time required to drain the pipe is calculated by dividing the volume of water in the pipeline segment to be drained by the calculated flow (“Q”) through the blowoff.

The blow-off pipe must be installed and fastened so that the safety valve is not exposed to shear, bending or torsional forces (e.g. by using supports, spring-loaded pipe hangers). The reaction forces when discharging must be taken into consideration.

Blow off assembly for underground applications shall be designed to fit within a standard valve box. In areas prone to cold weather they shall be self-draining and non-freezing. All working parts shall be serviceable from above with no digging required.

When this happens, the valve releases the excess pressure, preventing the system from reaching dangerously high levels that could lead to burst pipes, leaks, and other plumbing disasters.
