What was the Blitz? The heavy and frequent bombing attacks on London and other cities was known as the 'Blitz'. Night after night, from September 1940 until May 1941, German bombers attacked British cities, ports and industrial areas. London was bombed ever day and night, bar one, for 11 weeks.

The Blitz was a Second World War aerial bombing campaign carried out by the German air force, the Luftwaffe, from the 7th of September 1940 until the 11th of May 1941. It takes its name from the German word Blitzkrieg, meaning ‘lightning war’, which was the strategy that German forces used to quickly overwhelm armies in Europe.
