Bhagavatī (Devanagari: भगवती, IAST: Bhagavatī), is an Indian epithet of Sanskrit origin, used as an honorific title for goddesses in Hinduism and Buddhism. In Hinduism, it is primarily used to address the goddesses Sarasvati, Lakshmi and Parvati. In Buddhism, it is used to refer to several Mahayana Buddhist female deities, like Cundā. [1]

Goddess Bhagavathi is also known as the eight handed goddess and is one of the forms of goddess Durga. The main festivals of Goddess Bhagavathi are Dussehra and Durga Puja. ॐ नमो भगवती रक्तं पीठं नम: ll. Om namo bhagavathi raktam peetham namah ll. Parvati or Durga is the original manifested form of Mother Adi-Parashakti.

According to experts, about 250 years ago they built small temple of Bhagwatimata. There are many stories prevalent about origin of name of Kolhar Bhagwatipur. As narrated in Mahabharat, Gods and Devils fought for nector (Amrut). After churning of nectar fourteen gems (ratanas) were recovered. One of them was Amrut (nectar) drink of immortality.

Mathiyana Maa, a maternal deity, is one of the most powerful goddesses of Uttarakhand. Many stories relate to her origin: When Lord Shiva [5] was wandering with the dead body of Mata Sati in the sky, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's lifeless body using Sudharshan Chakra into 51 pieces.

Bhagavati means 'goddess' ‘holy one’ or ‘divine one’ and it is a common epithet for Goddess Shakti in India. Today, for a Hindu devotee there is no difference between Durga, Bhagavati and Bhadrakali. The names are used by a devotee to describe Mother Goddess.

In Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya/Chandi Path), Durga Mata is worshipped by 11 different names. Since she killed Mahishasura and restored happiness, peace and prosperity, the story of the mother is considered as the main example of the proof that truth always triumphs.
