Each woman chooses the patterns and colors for her dress according to her taste and mood. No two dresses are ever alike! In traditional Bedouin society, embroidery allowed women self-expression and added color and beauty above and beyond their daily chores.

The Desert Embroidery Projects brings employment to Bedouin women in Lakia and its surroundings while preserving the folk art women learned from their mothers and grandmothers. Women embroider at home and earn money through sales at our store and website.

But back to embroidery…the stitches were so fine and meticulous they looked as if they’d been machine-made! And the colors were gorgeous. We heard about a traditional embroidery pattern called the Path of Love, which is made into wall hangings and given at weddings.
