Bears are carnivoran mammals of the family Ursidae (/ ˈɜːrsɪdiː, - daɪ /). They are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans. Although only eight species of bears are extant, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere.

At birth, the cubs weigh less than a pound, have only a light covering of fur, and can barely crawl. The mother eats the birth membranes, licks the cubs, and warms them against her thinly furred belly.

By the end of February, cubs are 4 to 6 weeks old and usually weigh 2-3 pounds. They have dense fur almost an inch long. They can thermo-regulate to some extent, but they still cry for help staying warm and fed. They can crawl, but they can’t walk. Their eyes are opening or fully open.
