The Battle of Ben Het was a North Vietnamese armored assault on the Ben Het Special Forces Camp. It was the only tank battle between the United States and North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Ben Het Camp (also known as Ben Het Special Forces Camp, Ben Het SF/CIDG Camp, Ben Het Ranger Camp, FSB Ben Het and Firebase 12) is a former U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base in western Kon Tum Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

Oct 22, 2020 · On March 3, 1969, the North Vietnamese attacked the camp with a force that included PT-76 amphibious tanks. These tanks had a 76mm gun, but were lightly armored. In that battle, the M48 tanks engaged the PT-76s.

Transport planes drop needed supplies to the brave men of Ben Het while after four days of jungle strafing by air, ARVN and American troops and tanks battle to clear and hold the roads from Ben Het to Kontum and Dak To.

On 3 March 1969, Ben Het was attacked by the PAVN 66th Regiment, supported by armored vehicles of the 4th Battalion, 202nd Armored Regiment. One of the attacking PT-76s detonated a land mine, which alerted the camp and lit up the other PT-76s attacking the base.

On April 15, 1969, the 52nd Aviation Battalion changed the mission of the 189th Assault Helicopter Company from one of general support in II Corp to one of direct support to the 24th STZ. The company furnished six UH-1H Hueys and two UH-1C gunships each day to the unit.
