There are eight bat species in Maine. Some bat species hibernate in Maine during the winter, called hibernating bats, and other bat species migrate south for the winter, called tree bats. The eight bat species present in Maine are: Maine’s bats occupy a variety of habitats including wetlands, ponds, forests, fields, and even mountain slopes.

It’s hard to believe the diversity and amount of bat species that can be found in Maine! But, unfortunately, when you see a bat, it’s typically pretty difficult to determine which kind it is. These nocturnal creatures fly incredibly fast and are only active at night.

There are 8 species of bats that are native to the state of Maine. The largest is the Hoary Bat, while the Tricolored Bat is the smallest. The most common of them, i.e., the ones humans are most likely to encounter, are the Big Brown Bat and the Little Brown Bat.

With few to no flying insects available to them during winter in Maine, bats survive by hibernating, migrating to regions where insects are available, or a combination of these strategies. During hibernation, metabolic activities are greatly reduced.

The Big Brown Bat, known for its widespread presence, mainly relies on insects like beetles for sustenance. Hoary Bats, on the other hand, typically roost on trees but often face the unfortunate fate of being killed by wind turbines.

And, they show up inside during the coldest months of the long Maine winter. Our little brown bats live in summer cottages on lakes and ponds throughout the state.
