In order to tune a 4-string bass to A standard, tune every string a perfect fifth down from E standard to A-D-C-G. On a 5-string bass, tune every string 1 whole step down from B standard to A-D-C-G-C. You can do this by ear using a piano, or with a physical or an online tuner.

The 4 highest strings are ADGC, they work exactly as the 4-string configuration, but they sound a 4th higher. For the Cello Suites, You’ll never need to go upto fret 24, fret 19 on that high C string is usually the highest note.

Oct 22, 2020 · Tune it ADGC and enjoy your new "tenor bass". What you DO NOT want to do is take a set built for EADG and try to tune all of those strings up a fourth. That will almost certainly lead to damage of some sort.

Guess that's a pretty definitive answer to my question! I modded a tired bolt-on Rick copy into a 5 string and added an EMG 35DC pickup. I had it tuned EADGC initially until I realised that I don't use the C.
