In the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States, balds are mountain summits or crests covered primarily by thick vegetation of native grasses or shrubs occurring in areas where heavy forest growth would be expected.

Southern Appalachian grassy balds can be found in North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia. They are normally situated at elevations above 4000 feet and are nestled near the summits and ridges of mountains (Brooks, 1965). They are open, treeless and grassy.

Largely undocumented in this regional decline are the grass balds of the Oregon Coast Range, isolated grasslands in a landscape dominated by coniferous forests. This study was conducted to quantify the spatial extent and patterns of grass bald change.

The 764-acre Bald Mountain State Forest is made up of a mixture of native hardwood species and planted conifers. There are no designated trails but hiking is allowed throughout the property. The forest gets its name from the prominent hill (no longer bald!) near its center.
