Dec 1, 2016 · Newborn harp seals have soft, white fur and are therefore called whitecoats. Young seals of any species are also referred to as pups. Harp seals are pinnipeds, of which there are 33 species in the world, 18 of which belong to the Phocidae family (true seals).

With their fluffy white hair and round black eyes, harp seal pups may be the cutest baby animals on the planet! Adult harp seals weigh about 135 kg (300 lb.) and measure between 1.6-1.8 m (5.25-6.25 ft.). They have light gray fur with a dark mask on their face.

The amount of this lanugo fur on a newborn pup indicates how premature the pup is. The pup at left is almost full month premature, with a greatly reduced chance of surviving.

Does that sound like a good home for a newborn? Well, it gets the “seal of approval” from this little harp seal pup. That’s because the pup has a warm fur coat to keep him snug. And he has a watchful mom close by that feeds him whenever he’s hungry—which is most of the time!
