The Blohm & Voss BV 222 Wiking (pronounced "Veeking") was a large six-engined German flying boat designed and built by the German aircraft manufacturer Blohm & Voss. It was the largest Axis flying boat to enter production and operation during the Second World War .

BV 222 V2 'X4+BH', SAGr, 130, Norway, 1944-45. Both aircraft are finished in RLM 72/RLM 73 over RLM 65, but the Norwegian example has an additional disruptive white winter camouflage. The decals are nicely printed but have a slightly matt finish.

Oct 14, 2015 · The BV 222, like the Fw 200 Condor, was originally a civilian aircraft pressed into military service. Initially designed by Dr. Richard Vogt for an order by Luft Hansa in 1938, construction began in 1938.

Mar 21, 2003 · In the late 1930s, Germany's Lufthansa asked Blohm and Voss to design a large flying boat able to cross the North Atlantic. The military applications of this aircraft were obvious, and soon the Bv 222 Wiking was developed. Only 13 Bv 222s were built, and most were destroyed during the war.

V1, the specific Bv 222 depicted by my model, had a different fate: one of the first “Vikings” to fly supply missions in the Mediterranean, it was heavily armed during a refit in Hamburg in the winter of 41/42.
