BT-5: larger cylindrical turret, 45 mm 20-K gun, coaxial DT machine gun. Earlier tanks used simpler fully cylindrical bolted turrets with rear bustle welded on. BT-5-IS: prototype with three-axle drive, rejected due to complexity. In 1938 the same prototype was upgraded with sloped side plates, leading to development of BT-SV-2.

In June 1941, at the outset of Barbarossa, the BT-7 was used as the main cavalry tank of the Soviet army. Tank losses were high, with over 2,000 BT-7 series tanks lost in the first 12 months on the Eastern Front.

After the Winter War, there were still hundreds of BT-5s in service, but many were replaced with the BT-7 and other tanks. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, which caught the Soviets off guard. Soviet losses, including tanks, were appalling at the beginning of the invasion.

May 20, 2020 · According to the data given in Warthunder's official wiki, the BT-7 has: 5mm less frontal turret armour and 2mm less rear turret armour. Turret rotation/reload speed/horsepower. It might have thicker armor but less effective, idk not currently in game to check. Actually the BT-7 has a smaller turret but ok. 7>5.

BT-5 was the first major production model. Tank had a larger turreet for 45 mm 20K gun, a new M-5 engine and stronger suspension. Next to appear, in 1935, was the BT-7 series. BT-7 had a new turret and welded armor. Tank BT-7 was deployed in considerable numbers and several were captured by Germans and Finns.
