Brutalization (獣性,, Jūsei?) is the state when Paul Verlaine's persona model is stripped of control and temporarily unleashes his singularity beast, Demonic Beast Guivre. It can be activated when his Gate is opened of his own will by chanting the control incantation to break the persona's seal.

As an artificial ability, Verlaine can tap into Guivre's powers and succumb to Brutalization. Following Guivre's rampage during the King of Assassins Incident , Verlaine loses most of his ability. [ 1 ]

Verlaine tapped into Guivre's power when left with no choice against the Port Mafia's ambushing forces and succumbed to Brutalization. After he annihilated numerous operatives with his calamitous powers, Chūya Nakahara and Adam Frankenstein worked together to subdue Verlaine and thereby Guivre's rage.

Stormbringer spoiler: Actually this is still questionable as Verlaine managed to close his own Gate (singularity mode, Brutalization just like Chuuya's Corruption) by touching Chuuya, his younger brother. But not sure whether Chuuya could do the same to Verlaine as well or not.

After the battle, Verlaine’s main source of energy, the skill singularity was destroyed so he was on the verge of dying. But Randou has turned himself into a new “skill singularity” and hand it to Verlaine, saving him. Yes, you heard that right. That was his true form.

I understand that he tries to atone for these transgressions in the epilogue by training the Mafia’s assassins and living in the basement, but I don’t feel like this little detail is much of a redemption arc for him.
