BNSF 3990 emerges from the west portal of the Bozeman Tunnel as it slowly guides it's loaded coal train over the top of the pass. This train was in Muir for a few hours as both the headend and helper crews worked to resolve some Main Res issues.

With it's mid-train helpers now cut in, this loaded coal train throttles up out of Livingston and immediately begins the climb up Bozeman Pass. I was surprised by how many unit coal trains are now running with either DC-motored units or C4s. So much for these units being for fast intermodal trains.

Viewed from the old railbed hugging the bank, a BNSF Westbound coal train splits the scene a few feet higher on the causeway. A pitter patter usually would keep me sleeping in any given morning, but it sure is easy to wake up and shoot in the rain with scenes like this.
