The R50/2 was largely an improved version of the BMW R50, featuring the same engine, but with an output of 26hp from the 500cc horizontally opposed twin powerplant. These shaft drive motorcycles were equipped with a 4 speed transmission, and in production until 1969.

The R50 is the woolliest of the BMW twins. (Riders who want an out-and-out sports performance may prefer the R50S or R69S.) For all that the top speed of 90 mph was timed when the test machine was barely run-in.
