The Browning B78 was introduced in 1973 as part of Browning’s effort to revive interest in falling block single-shot rifles. Unlike its competitors, which focused on bolt-action and semi-automatic firearms, Browning took a bold step by offering a rifle designed for deliberate, precision shooting.

Browning Arms Company is best known for the A-Bolt and X-Bolt bolt-action rifles, the BAR semi-automatic rifle, the BPR pump-action rifle, the BPS pump-action shotgun, the Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun, and the Hi-Power pistol. Browning also manufactures a set of trap shotguns such as the 725 Pro Trap, Citori CX series, and the Cynergy series.

Jul 30, 2019 · The B78 was a competitor to Ruger’s No. 1 single-shot rifle, and the design was basically a resurrection of the old Winchester High Wall. Ruger did surprisingly well with the No. 1 back in the 1970s (the idea of a single-shot rifle was intriguing to me and many others), and I guess Browning wanted in on the action (pardon the pun).

Jul 18, 2020 · The 1885s and current Browning B78s are the same rifle, with a safer trigger than the B78 of yore. Both depart significantly internally from the original Browning and Winchester, but are wonderful rifles regardless.

Aug 25, 2012 · When Browning introduced the B78, it was called the B78 High Power Rifle, following the naming of other Browning High Power firearms (rifles and pistols). The B78 High Power Rifle had a tapered octagon barrel, Monte Carlo pistol grip stock, and a high-gloss finish.

Feb 16, 2015 · I have a B78 with serial # 1976Wxx. Can anyone tell me if this would be Belgian or Japanese. I can't read the barrel because of the custom scope mount holding the Kahles scope. I'm betting Belgium since it appears to have much better fit and finish than my m1885.
