I was aware that the secondary M.2 slot has only 2x PCIe gen 3 lanes allocated to it and that's a downside I can accept. All other motherboards have 4x PCIe on that slot so that made me curious where the missing lanes are.

But both the chipsets have PCIe 4.0 for the graphics card and M.2 NVMe drive, directly from the CPU. So, as B550 and X570 supports PCIe 4.0 GPU and at least one NVMe storage, price plays an important factor.

Jan 24, 2021 · B550 has 20 PCI-E 4.0 lanes; 16 lanes for GPU, and 4 lanes dedicated for the primary (top) NVMe M.2 slot. It won't drop down to PCI-E 3.0 speeds.... The SECOND NVMe M.2 slot runs at PCI-E 3.0 speed, because it is getting it's PCI-E lanes from the B550 chipset.
