But inspiration does not mean Lovecraft lifted the idea wholesale. He never said how Azathoth created the universe, and he never said Azathoth would end the universe.

Most of us I think prefer the former then the latter, I just use my own headcannon and assume that Derileth's version was a puppet to the larger entity as a whole.

Also, while Azathoth is often described as a blind idiot, Yog-Sothoth is called all knowing. However, if Azathoth were to awaken, Yog-Sothoth would likely perish instantaneously like the rest of us, so its still not really a competition.
