The Ais or Ays were a Native American people of eastern Florida. Their territory included coastal areas and islands from approximately Cape Canaveral to the Indian River. [1]

The Ais Indians, for whom Mission Dolores was intended and named, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais, were a relatively small tribe living on the southern fringe of the homeland of the numerous Caddo-speaking groups.

This Native-American tribe gathered fruits and nuts including sea grapes, coco plums, sea oats and palm berries. The Ais tribes fished using hooks made from the toe bones of deer they had hunted, taking full advantage of the great catches available off the coast of Florida.

Jun 1, 1995 · The Ais (Ayis, Ays, Eyeish, Ayish) Indians, an East Texas group associated with the Hasinais, spoke a language different from the Caddos of the region. For this reason, it has been suggested by some authorities that the Ais represented a culture older than the confederacy known to the French and Spanish.

The tribe is also known as the A'-ish, Aiaichi, Aliche, Aliches, Aiche, Ayays, Hais,[2] Ays, Ahijitos,[4] Aaya, Aays, or Aas. [6] The group known as Hauydix may also have been the Eyeish.

About the year 1,000 B.C., a peculiar tribe of Indians settled in the general Brevard area. These early inhabitants were named Ais or Ays (Ah-es) by the first Spanish explorers. The Ais Indians were aboriginal and should not be confused with the Seminole Indians of a later date.

The Ais Indians were a tribe of eastern Florida, closely connected with the Tequesta tribe. Their language was never recorded. Some ethnologists have guessed that it may have been related to Calusa, based on stories that people from the two tribes could communicate with each other. Like the Calusa, the Ais were devastated by European diseases.

The Ais Indians were a Caddoan band of East Texas, closely associated with the Hasinai. Their language was never recorded, but was said to be distinct from (although probably related to) the Caddo language. The Texas Ais do not exist as a tribal entity today.
