Jun 11, 2017 · Once someone completely understands how to sharpen an axe the proper way, and becomes proficient at the task, I see nothing wrong with skilled, and understanding hands using power tools to properly sharpen an axe. I think, Mr Hoffman does a great job describing the power tool sharpening process, and the things to watch for.

Also, for reference I have vivid memories of the birth of the internet. We just didn't have a whisper of the breadth of information there is today. I was flustered, confused and wanted to do better.

Feb 13, 2017 · It's certainly one way to sharpen an axe. There are many other shapes an axe grind can take for various purposes. Some other grinds will cut faster in certain uses. Differential treatment of different parts of the edge can result in a longer lasting edge. There are some edge shapes that can only be done at the speed of a file.

Mar 31, 2016 · Out of necessity this is flap disc work. I prefer a 40 grit disc for the reason phantomknives stated above - less heat. It produces an adequate finish for a tool I'm going to sent out with volunteers. They could still use a quick touch-up with a stone but they don't get it, no time. I can do 30 pulaskis, axe and adze ends with 1 40-grit disc.

Nov 3, 2018 · I'm just wondering what the best metal files for axe sharpening are. Coarse for nicked blades and fine for getting a nice sharp edge before polishing. I have had a few generic files that seemed like they started aggressive but didn't seem to cut well after several uses, even when cleaned with a file brush.

Mar 15, 2020 · I actually got the KME axe sharpener jig, however it hooks onto the rear of the axe head and the rear section has to be flat, but it's got that ridge in the middle which makes it not flat. I'm going to take it to work one of these days soon and grind the rear of the axe head flat and with 90 degree angles.
