Avidemux may be called with arguments. The most obvious is avidemux myFile.avi, that will load myFile.avi. You can also provide other commands, each one of them beginning by -- to invoke an action.

Avidemux will first decompress the audio, then apply the filters if any. If you don't set any filters, you will end up with a huge wav file as audio track. To be used, the corresponding audio codec must be present on your system.

Avidemux is now using libmplex for maximum compliance. If you use Mpeg Video as output format, only the raw video elementary stream will be saved. That means there will be no audio and that it is not suitable for VCD/SVCD/DVD authoring.

In process mode, avidemux internals ensure everything is allright. Most video codec use the previous frame as reference and only encode the delta. From time to time a complete frame is encoded with no temporal reference to other frames.

In that mode, avidemux will just copy the input compressed stream to the file without touching it. Process mode Avidemux will first decompress the video to YV12 frames, then apply the filters if any.
