Sep 4, 2020 · This is a misconception. Though lower in class, ashigaru were generally treated as full warriors, and by the late Sengoku and Edo their equipment could be quite impressive. Also note that in the late Sengoku and Edo at least, ashigaru was a specific rank. The term for "warriors who were not samurai" was not ashigaru but 雑兵 zōhyo.

Personally I like to buff both unit types with armor, but melee buffs are surprisingly effective on all ashigaru too. Being able to use your archers as backup shock infantry has its own benefits.

Ashigaru dominate the spear class, samurai dominate the sword class, and monks dominate the bow class. Samurai form the majority of cavalry and therefore dominate the cavalry class while the Portuguese dominate the matchlock class.

Apr 3, 2011 · It seems like Ashigaru are always a viable option, even for Oda. Even when you could field an army of all samurai/armored units it would still be advantageous to have Ashigaru take the brunt of any enemy army. Those poor bastards die so that my samurai can mop up.
