Staining ash. - FineWoodworking
Dec 15, 2002 · Rayfarrier - ash does not blotch when stained so if you have uneven coloring I'm guessing you got uneven coverage with the stain - possibly it was dry in spots when you wiped the excess. Or, you may have sanded the wood too smooth in areas and the stain didn't color it evenly. For dense hardwoods like ash or oak, sanding to 150 grit is plenty smooth before …
Finishing Ash - FineWoodworking
Mar 27, 2023 · I’m making a sideboard from ash. I’ve matched the panels for color and figure as best as I could. I’d like to keep the natural blond color of ash as much as practical, but because some of the adjacent boards which make up the panels have color variations, I’m thinking about adding some color/tint to better match them.

Maple or ash? Opinions? - FineWoodworking

Both are blond woods, with good reflective properties...which helps the lighting situation in a shop...But maple is a diffuse-porous wood, while ash is ring-porous.

working with ash - FineWoodworking
Mar 9, 2006 · I have worked a lot with ash, in lumber and veneer. One has to pay attention to grain, but otherwise it's a nice wood to work with. Hand cutting dovetail joints presents no particular problem other than the obvious openness of its grain is problematic for pencil marks, etc. I like its natural color but it takes stain much like the oaks. Do you have any specific …
Liming Ash - FineWoodworking
Jun 10, 2010 · Limed Ash Thanks for the reply. So, you'd suggest a white, oil based stain, followed by a water based finish over it. I tried the liming wax today, which gave a nice effect. I guess I'm looking more to fill the pores than color the rest of the ash, and it gives that effect. I opened the pores first with a bronze brush, and wiped on the wax, and then wiped the excess …
