Arp Schnitger was not born in Hamburg, but in Schmalenfleth near Golzwarden, in the year 1648, the son of a carpenter. After young Arp had learned the carpenter's trade from his father, he went into the organbuilder's workshop of his cousin Berendt Hus at Glückstadt in Holstein.
