Oct 30, 2016 · Armilus is supposed to be a Jew. He is a political figure in the land of Israel during the days of Moshiach. The language of the prophecy is highly allegorical in regard to his conception and birth. FWIW, the Vilna Gaon said the decree that Moshiach ben Yosef would be murdered by Armilus had been nullified due to the prayers of the Tzaddikim.

The name Armilus is thought to come from the Roman name Romulus because the Jews hated Rome for destroying the Second Temple and decimating Jerusalem. The Encyclopedia Judaica states that Satan Armilus will have hold of the terrestrial world (John 14:30) but Messiah will have control of heaven and eternal kingdom.

The angel referred to in this prophecy is, according to traditional Jewish teaching, pertaining to Armilus HaRasha, who is also called the embodiment in this world of "the Satan". An example of this can be seen in Sefer Avkat Rochel by Rabbeinu Makir ben Abba Mori in the first book, Section 1, Sign 7 of the ten signs of Moshiach.

@Doodle As is pointed out in the midrashim which discuss the birth of Armilus HaRasha, he is not a normal human being. It indicates that his creation is rooted in the same aspect of Gevurah that caused the 'Tzimtzum HaRishon' at the very beginning of creation. This means the total concealment of G-d's presence.
