The ear tufts of the Araucana chicken are quite different from the beards found on other breeds, for example Ameraucanas, Houdans, Faverolles, Polish, Crevecoeurs, Silkies, and the lady at the circus.

Sep 3, 2020 · Originally from South America the Araucana is certainly an odd looking chicken – they are special birds in many ways. They are good layers and as heritage birds should lay reasonably well into their third year at least.

The Araucana is a challenging breed that combines several unusual traits; first there are the peduncles (tufts) ; second they are rumpless (have no tail), third they produce blue eggs and finally there are the various combinations of skin (yellow or white) and shank (yellow or willow)color depending upon the feather coloring of the bird.

The common Araucana makes a good dual purpose chicken. They lay three blue eggs a week through spring and summer with a rapid decline in production through the winter months. Unlike many egg layers they also function well as a meat producing chicken.

Tailed “True Araucana Chickens” are called Ketros or Quetros, they are the same genetically with the tailed trait presenting and helping to maintain their hardiness by reducing the tail-less birds missing anatomy lethal traits.
