The approximation sign "≈" I use for decimal approximations with tilde "~" being a rougher approximation. Tilde "~" I use to state a geometric shape is similar to another one ie a triangle of sides 3/4/5 is similar to a triangle with sides 30/40/50.

For example, can I write: $$129{.}87\cdot 6\approx 130 \cdot 6 = 780 $$ or is it more correct to write: $$129{.}87\cdot 6\approx 130 \cdot 6 \approx 780 $$ since $129{.}87\cdot 6$ is not equal to the approximation $780$?

There is no universally accepted notation, but $\approx$ and $\simeq$ both generally mean "approximately equal to." However $\simeq$ is sometimes used to denote "is similar," for instance that two triangles are similar ($\triangle ABC \simeq \triangle DEF$). You would rarely, if ever, use $\approx$ in that situation.
