ANTHONY J. Chandris was a popular and admired shipowner during his lifetime, and he occupies a special place in Greek and international shipping history since the Second World War. With roots in the island of Chios, the Chandris family was active in shipping during the age of sail.

The Greek ship ANTONIOS CHANDRIS was intercepted and sunk by a German raider on September 8th, 1940, in 12° N., 35° W. The chief officer and nine men reached shore. 22 crew will be rescued 31 days later on October 8th, over 1400 miles away, by Portuguese freighter Serpa Pinto and landed at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The shipwrecked were spotted and picked up by the "Serpa Pinto", from the Companhia Colonial de Navegação (CCN), on October 8, 1940, 30 days after their ship, the "Antonios Chandris", was sunk by the German auxiliary cruiser "Widder".
