The upper end of the tibia (shin bone) shows an expanded area of bone and a human-like orientation of the ankle joint, indicative of regular bipedal walking (support of body weight on one leg at the time).

Australopithecus anamensis is the earliest known australopith. We do not know nearly as much about the species as about other australopiths due to a paucity of fossil material. Au. anamensis may be descended from the ardipith lineage or a heretofore undiscovered group. Lucy’s species, Au. afarensis, may be descended from Au. anamensis.

Fossils attributed to Australopithecus anamensis (which means “southern ape of the lake,” from “anam” or lake in the Turkana language) have been recovered from sites in the Turkana Basin in Kenya (Allia Bay and Kanapoi) as well as in Ethiopia (Middle Awash and Woranso-Mille).

Leakey and her colleagues determined that the fossils were those of a very primitive hominin and they named a new species called Australopithecus anamensis (‘anam’ means ‘lake’ in the Turkana lanaguage).
