If you start it in April or May, and don't see good roots by October, open up the package, re-carve the trunk to ensure no bridging of cambium had occurred, and score just the bottom edge of the callus that did form.

Here is the picture of the raw material when I acquired it. Sergio and I just performed some pruning and branch selection as well as light wiring during the workshop.

I searched for Carpinus caroliniana - and only got 2 hits. I searched for "hornbeam" and got 5 pages worth. Reading through, maybe 25% of them are American hornbeam, Carpinus caroliniana.
