The Ameli is an automatic weapon that externally resembles the 7.92×57mm Mauser MG 42 machine gun of World War II but has more in common with the MG 45 and its post-war variant, the West German 7.62×51mm NATO MG 3.

The CETME Ameli is, in effect, a modernized and scaled-down version of the notorious MG42. It uses the same roller-locked action and has an impressively high fire rate as high as 1200 rounds per minute. It is built with a 15.6 inch quick-change barrel that is removed by rotating the rear sight / carry handle which opens the barrel housing.

Ameli is an abbreviation of ‘Ametralladora Ligera’, which translates to light machine gun. Chambered in 5.56x45mm, the Ameli preceeded the adoption of the CETME Model L by several years but they two were developed at the same time.

One of the less well known firearms in the roller-locked family of designs is the Spanish Ameli (a contraction of “Ametralladora ligera”), or “Special Purpose Assault Machinegun”. Developed in the late 1970s by CETME, the Ameli was basically a scaled-down MG42 machine gun in 5.56x45mm.
