Alydar (March 23, 1975 – November 15, 1990) was an American Thoroughbred race horse and sire. A chestnut colt, he was most famous for finishing a close second to Affirmed in all three races of the 1978 Triple Crown.

Alydar was one of the greatest sires in Thoroughbred history—a 1,200-pound genetic wonder whose offspring often became champion racehorses themselves.

Alydar is the only horse ever to finish second in all three American Triple Crown races. He lost the series to Affirmed by a total margin of less than two lengths.

Alydar won three Grade 1 races — the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, and Blue Grass Stakes — as a 3-year-old prior to the 1978 Kentucky Derby, for which he was a slight favorite over Affirmed. Alydar, however, was defeated by his rival by 1½ lengths in the Derby.
