Almira, Königin von Castilien ("Almira, Queen of Castile", HWV 1; full title: Der in Krohnen erlangte Glücks-Wechsel, oder: Almira, Königin von Castilien) is Handel's first opera, composed when he was 19 years old. It was first performed in Hamburg in January 1705.

Had it struck an inch either side, the history of Western music would have been very different. As it was, the two were quickly reconciled and a few weeks later Mattheson sang in Handel’s debut opera, Almira. Premiered in Hamburg on 8 January 1705, it was deemed a great success.

George Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) composed works including 42 operas; 24 oratorios; more than 120 cantatas, trios and duets; numerous arias; odes and serenatas; solo and trio sonatas; 18 concerti grossi; and 12 organ concertos.

In Hamburg, Handel composed two operas, Almira and Nero, both in 1705. A year later, Handel began a four-year tour of Italy, during which he visited Florence, Venice, Rome, and Naples. It was at this time that he wrote his first oratorio, an extended dramatic work on a religious theme, called Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno in 1707.

In Hamburg, Handel joined the violin section of the opera orchestra. He also took over some of the duties of harpsichordist, and early in 1705 he presided over the premiere in Hamburg of his first opera, Almira.
