Apr 9, 2023 · The title of Highmarshal instead of General was probably twofold: the title of Highmarshal seems to hold a heroic meaning in Alethi society, giving the Wall Guard, potential recruits, and the citizens of Kholinar a much-needed morale boost; the title also elevates Azure as a figure above the highlords that have carved up the city streets and ...

Mar 6, 2014 · Alethi glyphs are not simply transliterations of English, but represent words in the Alethi language. The esteemed jofwu has compiled images of all known glyphs in another thread. Edit: The next bit is obsolete, as of Oathbringer. See p.519 for a key directly from the Calligrapher's Guild, courtesy of Nazh.
Why the Alethi are not a medieval society
Feb 26, 2016 · Given that both villages and larger population-centers had populations similar to those in medieval Europe, and given that Alethi geography seems less fertile than European, it seemed reasonable to guess that Alethi population density would, if anything, be a bit lower than medieval Europe's population density.

Jul 12, 2016 · Alethkar natives other than the Shin have the epicanthic fold, but the Alethi wouldn't look strictly Asian to you--they'd look like a race that you can't define, as we don't have them on earth. I use half-Asian/half-arab or half-asian/half-Polynesian models as my guide some of the time, but Alethi are going to have a tanner skin than some of those.

Aug 2, 2022 · Alethi are canonically dark skinned, black haired, with epicanthic folds. So they're closest in appearance to various Asian ethnicities, generally a mix of them. Jan 2, 2017 · Helaran (not Alethi, but close) Notice that all of these are men. This paradigm is only used for male names. As far as I can tell, all Alethi men have either Vorin names, or names in this pattern. (Vorin meaning palindromic, with one letter added, subtracted, or changed.) The only complication is Restares, whose name is neither Vorin nor classical.

Jan 19, 2019 · Then the comment about how the darker Alethi skin tones and hair. People preferred them to lighter tones, and blonde or red hair is an indicator of mixed blood. But light-toned eyes are remarkable, and an indicator of some divine inheritance, etc, etc. Also, the appearance of glyph-pairs is very reminiscent of the C/J/K families.... just a thought.

Over time they would select for having large, strong children. On Earth humans are steadily getting taller due to better access to Healthcare and better food.

May 2, 2022 · So far I'm enjoying the book, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the illiteracy of the Alethi men. I get that Alethi culture dictates that reading is for girls and war is for boys, but initially I was under the impression that there were some exceptions and that male surgeons (and surgeon apprentices, and probably some men in other ...

Sep 1, 2021 · The Alethi are a mix of Middle Eastern/Far Eastern/Polynesian. Also per Brandon. I imagine the Azish as looking Ethiopian. Nearly everyone who isn’t Shin has an epicanthic fold, while the Shin have round eyes. So I find it very amusing that so many imagine the Shin as looking Far Eastern.
