The Alco T6 (DL 440) is a diesel-electric switcher locomotive rated at 1,000 horsepower (750 kW), that rides on two-axle trucks, having a B-B wheel arrangement. The ' T' stands for 'Transfer', meaning this locomotive is capable of faster transition and higher sustained speeds than the regular ' S' - type yard switcher series.

The Alco T6 debuted in March, 1958 and as can probably be guessed was most successful with industries and in mining applications including Brewster Phospahtes, Kaiser Steel, Portland Terminal Railroad, Newburgh & South Shore, and the Monongahela Connecting Railroad.

Jul 8, 2007 · So, yes, the T-6 is the basic Alco 1,000 hp switcher (which went to "Type-A" trucks with the S-4 of 1950) with modernized components: Alco 251 engine, appropriate newer GE generator model, and-- this makes a real difference in lugging ability-- 752 traction motors.

ALCO built the 1,000hp T-6 from 1958-1960. Conrail inherited 6 of the ex-PRR ALCO 251B straight-6 powered T-6 units from the Penn Central. The initial CR roster retained their PC number series 9844-9849.
